‘After We Fell’ Ending Explained: ‘After 3’ Comes With a Big Twist for Hardin

After We Fell, which is the third movie in the After romance film series, is now available to rent or buy on VOD in the U.S. and, for Amazon subscribers in the U.K., is available to stream for free on Amazon Prime U.K. Fair warning: This movie doesn’t really have a “plot” in the traditional sense of the word. Instead, this adaptation of Anna Todd’s adult fiction novel of the same name is more like a series of loosely connected sex scenes between leads Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes-Tiffin.

OK, fine, there is somewhat of a story when it comes to the ongoing saga of Tessa Young and Hardin Scott. Their passionate (and arguably toxic) relationship is once again tested by various outside forces and internal insecurities in this new movie. Will their love be able to survive it? Maybe it would if they try actually communicating for once!

But I digress. If you weren’t giving After We Fell 100 percent of your attention as you watched it, I 100 percent do not blame you. Never fear, because Decider is here to help. Read on for the After We Fell plot summary, and the After We Fell ending explained.

WHAT HAPPENS IN AFTER WE FELL? AFTER WE FELL PLOT SUMMARY:

Tessa’s alcoholic dad is back in her life, and staying with Tessa and Hardin, much to Hardin’s chagrin. Meanwhile, Tessa is gearing up to move to Seattle for her new publishing job, and for some reason decided to keep this a secret. When Hardin finds out she’s leaving, the couple has their first big fight-and-make-up sex sequence of the movie. Buckle up, there are at least three more of these to go.

Tessa moves to Seattle and stays with her coworkers, the married couple Kimberly (now played by Arielle Kebbel) and Christian Vance (now played by Stephen Moyer). We learn that Kimberly and Vance are expecting a baby together. This part may be confusing to some fans, as Kimberly and Vance were played by different actors in the previous film, After We Collided. (The original actors couldn’t return due to a change in the filming location, which was done in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.)

After several more pointless rounds of getting jealous of each other, fighting, and having soft-core porn sex, Hardin finally gets over himself and decides to follow Tessa to Seattle like she wanted him to. Meanwhile, Hardin mom’s is getting ready to get remarried. Hardin wants to invite Tessa to the wedding, but he’s worried about what she will think of him if she sees where he came from. (Also, Tessa finds out that she might not be able to have kids in a baffling side plot.)

Vance convinces Hardin that he should invite Tessa to his mother’s wedding, so he does. Cue the travel montage to England! Everything seems to be going well… until Hardin walks in on Vance having sex with his mother on the night before her wedding. Uh oh!

WHAT IS THE AFTER WE FELL ENDING EXPLAINED?

Hardin is furious at his mother and Vance, and heartbroken to boot. The wedding goes through as planned, although Kimberly is now pissed at her cheating husband, Vance.

After a gentle push from Tessa, Hardin agrees to get a drink with Vance after the wedding to give the man a chance to explain himself. Are you ready for this plot twist? It turns out Vance and Hardin’s mother have been in a sexual relationship for a very long time. So long, in fact, that it turns out Christian Vance is… Hardin’s real father. Dun dun dun!

Hardin is devastated by this revelation. Tessa finds him crying in the street, they embrace, and with that, the movie ends.

But don’t worry, that’s not the end of the saga. Tessa and Hardin will return for more drama, toxicity, and make-up sex in the fourth and final After movie, After Ever Happy.
