Alison Hammond raised eyebrows today after admitting that she did not notice £10,000 going missing from her bank account.

Alison had been chatting to This Morning co-host Dermot O’Leary and guests Gyles Brandreth and Carol Vorderman when she made the comment.

‘So I got my car serviced,’ Alison said, continuing: ‘And I paid for the service and didn’t notice until they phoned me that they charged me £10,000 for the service.

‘£10,000?!’ a stunned Carol exclaimed, before Alison elaborated: ‘They charged me £10,000 then noticed a month later and phoned me up and said: “We’ve overcharged you. It was £1,000 and we’ve charged you £10,000.”‘

She continued: ‘And I didn’t even notice. But it’s nice that they phoned me back.’

Of course, given the current cost of living crisis, viewers were more than a little stunned at the story.

One wrote: ‘How out of touch is #ThisMorning. I didn’t even notice I was charged £10,000 for my service? I noticed I was overcharged £5 last week and I was panicking as being disabled I have to stretch any money I get very thin just to live.’

‘How would you not know £10,000 gone out of your account? Unbelievable. Alison dropped herself straight in it there!!’ someone else ranted.

Another penned: ‘Absolutely sickening watching Alison Hammond not noticing 10k missing from her account… People are really scared out there worrying about money, and you show this! Lucky you Alison, having that much money aye?. You couldn’t make this up.. Read the room!!’

‘I’d love to see someone take 10K out of my bank without it being noticed. Try taking £100 at the moment and it would be declined,’ one person wrote.

‘If you don’t notice £10,000 taken from your account you must have a heck of a lot of money in there!’ another shared.

Alison’s comments, and the backlash afterwards, come amid the rising cost of living crisis with many people anxious about paying bills this winter and drastically cutting back on spending money, especially in the run up to Christmas.

It’s estimated that spending on non-essentials this Christmas will plummet by £12bn and there is significant demand for retailers to make shopping more accessible this winter.

While 75% of Brits are looking to purchase cheaper gifts this year an alarming 40% of Brits cannot afford Christmas and say it will ruin the holiday season.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
