Amazon customers won't be able to use Visa credit cards from 2022 - here's why

Amazon has told customers that they won't be able to use Visa credit cards issued in the UK from the beginning of next year to pay for items on the site.

The change will come in from January 2022, according to the company.

Currently Amazon users can choose to pay via Visa, Delta, Visa Electron, MasterCard, EuroCard, American Express, UK based Maestro and Solo card, with this including Visa credit cards.

However, in an email to customers, the company confirmed it will stop accepting payments made using Visa credit cards issued in the UK "starting January 19 2022".

UK-issued Visa credit cards will no longer be accepted due to "the high fees Visa charges for processing credit card transactions".

Customers will still be able to use debit cards, including Visa, and non-Visa credit cards.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg has reported that Visa credit cards that have been issued outside UK will still be available for use.

A spokesperson for Amazon said: "The cost of accepting card payments continues to be an obstacle for businesses striving to provide the best prices for customers.

"These costs should be going down over time with technological advancements, but instead they continue to stay high or even rise.

"As a result of Visa’s continued high cost of payments, we regret that Amazon.co.uk will no longer accept UK-issued Visa credit cards as of January 19 2022.

"With the rapidly changing payments landscape around the world, we will continue innovating on behalf of customers to add and promote faster, cheaper, and more inclusive payment options to our stores across the globe."
