BAFTA TV Awards: The Sixth Commandment’s Eanna Hardwicke opens up about working with ‘the astonishing’ Timothy Spall

The Sixth Commandment actor Eanna Hardwicke has opened up about how “lucky” he felt to be acting alongside the “astonishing” and “generous” Timothy Spall.

Hardwicke, who played the role of real-life murderer Ben Field in the BBC One drama, gushed about his lead co-star Spall while speaking with virginradio.co.uk and other press at the BAFTA TV Awards 2024 red carpet.

The Sixth Commandment is nominated this evening (12th May) for the Best Limited Drama award. Hardwicke is also up for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Field, and Spall is nominated for Best Leading Actor for his role as one of Field’s victims, Peter Farquhar.

Asked what it was like to work alongside the Mr Turner star, Hardwicke replied: “I couldn’t have got luckier really. Not only is he an astonishing actor, but he’s generous, he’s funny, [and] he’s really interesting to talk to.

“When you work with actors like that, it makes it very easy,” the Lakelands star added. “You’re not thinking about yourself, you can just react to what they’re doing. I couldn’t have been in better company.”

Hardwicke also opened up on the red carpet about how much it meant to the show’s cast and creatives when their take on the emotional true story was received well by audiences watching at home.

“You hope for a response like that,” the actor said, thinking about how the drama had succeeded in educating people about the story at the heart of the drama. “You hope that people are moved by it… you hope that it lands with people on an emotional level more than anything.

“That’s what really meant the world to me,” he continued. “That it moved people, that they cared about it, that they were invested in it, and it wasn’t just something that they clicked on for an hour. For me it doesn’t get better than that.”

Opening up about the honour of being nominated alongside the others in this year's supporting actor category (including Happy Valley’s Amit Shah, Slow Horses Jack Lowden and Succession’s Matthew MacFadyen), Hardwicke shared: “It’s such a joy, definitely, to be here. And amongst those actors!

“It’s such a trite thing to say, but I really am in the company of actors who I’ve respected for so long, so it’s just bewildering to be in that category.”
