Barcelona vs. Celta Vigo result: Dembele, Aubameyang star in Barca win amid concern for Araujo
Barcelona and Celta Vigo met at the Nou Camp with little to play for as the 2021-22 La Liga season winds down. Still, the match provided plenty of entertainment as always with these two, as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s brace led Barcelona to a 3-1 victory over 10-man Celta Vigo.
Ousmane Dembele, as he has many times through 2022, starred in the build-up. He tore the Celta Vigo left flank to shreds and helped the hosts find the back of the net their first three shots on target of the match.
Down 3-0 early in the second half, Celta Vigo picked up one back through a mistake by Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen which Iago Aspas finished off. That was all the visitors had, however, as halftime substitute Jeison Murillo was sent off in the 58th minute for a last-man foul.
After the decision, it was all Barcelona the rest of the way.
There was a scary moment on the hour mark as Ronald Araujo, having taken a blow to the head moments earlier, went down off the ball. He required immediate medical attention as players from both teams frantically waved for medical personnel, and he was eventually taken off the field in an ambulance and transported to the hospital.
Xavi will have a massive selection headache next week against Getafe: In addition to Araujo’s likely absence, the trio of Frenkie de Jong, Eric Garcia, and Jordi Alba all picked up yellow cards that trigger a suspension for the next match.

Ousmane Dembele starred, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang profited as Barcelona picks up a multi-goal victory over bogey team Celta Vigo.
All thoughts now are with Ronald Araujo, whose scary head injury is concerning. Xavi will have a headache picking his team next week with so many players missing through injury and suspension.
90+10 min: Frenkie de Jong picks up a yellow card via a silly tactical foul in midfield as he drags back Gabriel Vega and picks up a caution. It's an extra silly caution as de Jong misses the next match for yellow card accumulation and Barcelona is down yet another midfielder.
Moments later Jordi Alba also picks up a yellow card, and he's also set to miss next match alongside Eric Garcia. Barcelona may have to field a team of youth players at Getafe next weekend.
90+6 min: Ansu Fati takes aim with a speculative shot from outside the top of the box, and it rests safely into the hands of Matias Dituro. It's the first official save of the evening for the Celta goalkeeper, who's seen Barcelona's three previous shots on target all find the back of the net.
88th min: CHANCE, Barcelona! Ousmane Dembele just cannot be stopped on the right-hand side. He beats Fran Beltran down the edge and passes to the middle for Ansu Fati, and under heavy pressure, the youngster puts it wide of the near post with the goal gaping.
Dani Alves comes off to a big hand from the crowd, with Oscar Mingueza coming on in his stead.
There will be 11 minutes of added time due to the situation with Araujo earlier in the half. Speaking of which, Barcelona has issued an update, saying that Araujo has been taken to the hospital with a concussion.
83rd min: Barcelona asserting their dominance with the man advantage, and Celta Vigo will have lots to do to keep this at 3-1. There's a penalty shout as Joseph Aidoo gives Fati a slight push in the back, but it's not enough for the official to point to the spot.
Luuk de Jong comes on for Aubameyang to cheers of "Luuuuuuuuk" from the Camp Nou faithful. He very nearly makes an immediate impact, heading wide after beating Renato Tapia in the air.
77th min: CHANCE, Barcelona! Riqui Puig has the ball in the back of the net, and he punches the air in celebration, but it's ruled out for offside. Eric Garcia came back from an offside position to interfere with play, and a VAR review confirms the decision.
69th min: CHANCE, Celta Vigo! What a missed opportunity for the visitors to get back into it! After the restart, another mistake at the back sees Celta Vigo through on goal, but the visiting attack is again indecisive and the chance disappears. Barcelona must mentally recover after the serious injury to Araujo.
68th min: Nearly an eight-minute delay is finally over, after an issue with loading Araujo and his backboard into the ambulance. We are back underway at the Nou Camp.
60th min: We have a very concerning situation here. Two Barcelona players are down injured, but the most concern is for defender Ronald Araujo as both teams signal for the medical staff and the ambulance rushes onto the field. It's not clear what is going on, but there's an urgency to the actions.
The game has been delayed, but football appears to be secondary at the moment. The television broadcast has not gone to a replay or shown a close-up of the player, which is concerning.
Finally, a replay is shown, and it seems like a very innocuous clash of heads with Gavi that resulted in the issue. Araujo appeared fine, with nothing more than a grimace as he ran away, and then went down moments later off the ball. He's taken off the field on a backboard and loaded into the ambulance. The Nou Camp crowd is stunned but gives Araujo a muted cheer.
As the game looks to restart, Clement Lenglet comes on to replace the injured defender, while Memphis Depay is replaced by Ansu Fati. Also to mention, Celta Vigo made the necessary change just before the injury, as Renato Tapia replaced Thiago Galhardo.
58th min: RED CARD, Celta Vigo! Celta Vigo are down a man! Murillo, only on at halftime, is sent off for a last-man tackle on Memphis Depay. It's an easy decision for the referee as Depay went to dribble around the Celta Vigo defender and all Murillo could do was send him to the ground.
VAR could play a role here though, as it appears on replay that Depay was slightly offside on the feed from the back. The referee does not go to a video review, and Depay comes very close to scoring on the free kick. A replay afterwards shows the technology confirms Depay was onside so the decision stands!
52nd min: CHANCE, Barcelona! This game is wide open now. Dembele again with no resistance as he charges down the right flank, and his feed into the middle is wonderful, but it's cut out by a Celta Vigo defender at the last moment before Aubameyang could claim his hat trick.
51st min: CHANCE, Celta Vigo! Brazilian Thiago Gallardo crops up on the penalty spot with a chance for a second for the visitors in quick succession, but he slices the volley attempt under heavy pressure and skies it over the bar.
50th min: GOAL! CELTA VIGO! It's a horror mistake from Ter Stegen who passed it to an unaware Araujo, and Celta Vigo capitalize! Last time these two teams matched up, Barcelona squandered a 3-0 lead. Could it be happening again?
48th min: GOAL! BARCELONA! Ousmane Dembele the creator, again, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang the finisher, again. Barcelona is flying now, and it's with very little resistance from Celta Vigo.
Dembele down the right gets almost no pressure, so he dribbles all the way down the flank and into the box, and his easy cross to Aubameyang is redirected into the back of the net. Almost no defensive pressure the whole way, and Aubameyang was wide open.
46th min: Changes for both sides as Barcelona brings on Riqui Puig (much to the delight of the home fans) for Ferran Torres, while Celta Vigo is forced into a change as Kevin Vazquez goes off with an ankle injury, with Jeison Murillo taking his place.
Barcelona will see Depay take Torres's position on the left and Puig moved into the midfield. The team re-assumes the 4-3-3 it is more accustomed to, after the 4-2-3-1 produced two goals in the first half but not a ton of attacking output or control.
The scoreline flatters Barcelona a bit, but after a positive start for Celta Vigo, the hosts built into the game and took their chances.
Memphis Depay has thrived in the No. 10 role, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang remains a very strong finisher. Two shots on target, two goals for Barcelona in a somewhat drab game. It's somewhat clear that both sides have little to play for.
41st min: GOAL! BARCELONA! It's a total calamity at the back for Celta Vigo, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang produces a wonderful finish to double Barcelona's lead! Depay creates the chance down the left edge of the 18-yard box, and as Nestor Araujo can't clear, it falls right to Aubameyang who picks out the bottom corner with a sliced off-balance finish.
Barcelona haven't produced a high volume of chances, with just two shots on target, but both have found the back of the net.
36th min: CHANCE, Celta Vigo! Ter Stegen makes a vital full-stretch save to keep an effort from Thiago Gallardo that was destined for the bottom corner. The follow-up chance moments later sees Ter Stegen make another big save on Gallardo, whose header wasn't far enough out of reach.
30th min: GOAL! BARCELONA! The first real attacking move for Barcelona, and the game's first goal! It's all made by Ousmane Dembele who clowns two defenders on the right flank with a nutmeg and springs free. As Dembele raced towards goal, the Celta Vigo defense was all out of sorts, and he cut a cross to Memphis Depay all alone on the penalty spot. Visiting goalkeeper Matias Dituro should have done better, as the Depay shot was right at him and he dove overtop the effort, getting a touch but not enough.
27th min: Some better moments for Barcelona moving forward but still no end product as the Celta Vigo defense is able to cut out the attempts at creativity.
22nd min: The visitors continue to have all the attacking possession. A cross from Franco Cervi is a dangerous one across the face of goal but it evades his Celta Vigo teammates for a finish.
14th min: CHANCE, Celta Vigo! How has Iago Aspas produced such a weak effort from such a great chance??? It's a mind-boggling result from a clinical finisher with a brilliant opportunity! A dreadful giveaway from a Ronald Araujo mis-kick sees Aspas clean through, but Aspas is indecisive trying to beat Ter Stegen one-on-one, and the Barcelona defender recovers to tackle and clear.
12th min: CHANCE, Celta Vigo! Iago Aspas very nearly had a lunging tap-in at the far post after ter Stegen couldn't reach a cross, but the flag is up anyways to show it wouldn't have counted anyways. The visitors are turning the screw early.
7th min: Barcelona with hardly a kick of the ball through the first seven minutes. The hosts are used to playing a 4-3-3, but squad restrictions have forced Xavi to play Depay as a No. 10 in a 4-2-3-1. The lack of a third midfielder has allowed Celta Vigo to control the middle of the pitch.
Barcelona get a pair of turnovers and tries to counter, but they both fizzle out at the top of the visiting penalty area.
4th min: Celta Vigo's had some early joy down the left-hand flank against Dani Alves. The visitors get the game's first corner, which is played short, and wasted.
1st min: The game is underway at the Camp Nou! Will we get another barnburner from these two sides?
7 mins to kick: The teams are out for a final warmup, and the match is close to getting under way! Barcelona has little to play for, and Celta Vigo is out of the running for a European place, but these teams still have a history of putting on a show.
77 mins to kick: Lineups are in. Memphis Depay gets the start in a very attacking Barcelona lineup, while Celta Vigo make no changes from the win last time out, leaving last week substitute heroes on the bench again.
107 mins to kick: A cool look inside the Barcelona dressing room ahead of the match!
120 mins to kick (7:30 p.m. local): With Barcelona's season essentially wrapped up, and a Champions League place secure, the squad has decided to enjoy training a little bit, with a fun knockout game!
The hosts have significant issues in midfield to deal with. Pedri, Sergi Roberto, and Nico Gonzalez are all out injured, and the ageless Sergio Busquets is suspended for yellow card accumulation. While fan-favorite Riqui Puig was an option in midfield, instead Memphis Depay drops into midfield in a very attacking lineup.
Along the back line there are problems as well. Gerard Pique remains sidelined with a muscle injury, as does American Sergino Dest, while goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen returns after missing out over the weekend with an illness.
Young Ansu Fati scored a critical goal off the bench against Real Betis last weekend, having returned from his lengthy injury absence to make two substitute appearances, and but he's not yet ready for a starting role.
Celta Vigo are one of the healthiest teams in La Liga, with defender Hugo Mallo the only player on the sidelines with a patella fracture. Otherwise, the team is fully fit.
The biggest decision for manager Edouard Coudet was possibly upsetting the regular starting lineup for the likes of Renato Tapia or Nolito, who both made a significant impact off the bench in the 4-0 romp of Alaves last time out. The quick turnaround could be a factor, but upsetting the natural order comes with risks, and he has decided to make no changes.
Nolito, in fact, does not make the matchday squad at all, while Tapia is again on the bench.

Every club has a bogey team. Celta Vigo are just that for Barcelona.
Currently sitting 11th in the La Liga table, Celta Vigo have achieved a result in five of the last eight league matches against Barcelona. Often, they leave it late. In the last seven league games between these two clubs in which Celta Vigo found the back of the net, the underdogs were the last team to score in six of them, including the last two in which dramatic late strikes earned Celta Vigo points.
Late goals have also punctuated the Barcelona season of late, with three of their last five league matches seeing late strikes in the final 10 minutes plus stoppage time. As Barcelona grapple with injury, this is set up for another thriller, and Celta Vigo can come away with points.
