BBC The Graham Norton Show: Who is Rachel Zegler?

The Graham Norton Show has another great line-up of guests this week and new face Rachel Zegler joins acting legends Kenneth Branagh and Vicky McClure.

But who is the star being interviewed by Graham on Friday, January 21? Let's find out more about Rachel Zegler.

New Jersey-born Rachel, who is 20-year-old, can be seen in Steven Spielberg's remake of West Side Story, playing Maria opposite Ansel Elgort's Tony.

Rachel was cast after Steve Spielberg put out an open casting call for actors to audition for the film and she was cast from 30,000 applicants.

Speaking on the show about the process, she said it was "a fairy-tale come true," and added: "I manifested working on the film – I always had a picture of the original film in my locker at high school. 30,000 people went for the role, and I had nine auditions – no job is worth that but this one was!”

She said: "The one thing I asked Steven Spielberg for when I got the part was to still do my senior school musical production of Shrek and he said yes!”

From the age of 14 the star has run a YouTube Channel on which she shares her singing talents, and one of her videos - Shallow from A Star Is Born - has racked up 11 million views on Twitter.

She recently won a Golden Globe for her performance as Maria, too. Of Columbian and Polish descent, Rachel was the first Latina to win in the Best Actress - Musical or Comedy, and the youngest ever winner.

Her next roles will be Snow White in Disney's live action remake and she's also joined the sequel to Shazam!, Fury of the Gods.

Rachel, talking more about her very first film role playing Maria, said: “It’s so cool and unlike anything I could have imagined. It is definitely a baptism by fire. I’ve seen the film nine times and that is enough for me as I find it very hard seeing and hearing myself on screen, but I am very proud of what we did.”

Recently, Rachel got into some hot water for reading out tweets from the Britney, who recently sent out a string of posts in reaction to sister, Jamie Lynn's interviews talking about what's in her new memoir Things I Should Have Said.

The actress read out the angry messages in the style of an audition and fans did not react well.

Rachel posted an apology saying she loved Britney.

“Anyone who knows me knows how much I love Britney and am rooting for her always.

"While I meant no disrespect whatsoever, I should have thought about how this could be perceived, and I’m so sorry for upsetting or disappointing anyone.”
