Brentford took on Ipswich's Under-21s side at Wheatsheaf Park in a pulsating contest which saw eight goals scored.

Goals from Ashley Hay, Nathan Young-Coombes and Kyreece Lisbie were not enough to prevent defeat against the Tractor Boys

The Bees were looking to continue their good run of form, coming into the contest undefeated in three games.

The last two games hade seen them outscore their opponents by at least two goals.

Ipswich took the lead early on as Matty Roberts’ free-kick found the head of Harry Barbrook who steered his header into the corner of the net.

Brentford cancelled out their opener soon after as Hay headed brilliantly, converting from a Mukhammadali Urinboev cross.

Young-Coombes went close with a header from distance, but the ball dropped the wrong side of the post.

The striker then smashed an effort against the post, with a shot from just outside of the box.

Young-Coombes got his goal though, reacting quickest from a Hay header which was parried into his path by the goalkeeper.

It was Ipswich’s turn to draw level as a loose pass in midfield from the young Bees, allowed the away side to pounce and Matt Ward was in acres of space to compose himself and finish inside the box.

The Tractor Boys were in front again as Matty Roberts went from provider to goalscorer, firing a left-footed effort from just inside the box past Vincent Angelini.

The barrage of chances continued and Brentford went close through Urinboev whose half-volley was saved well by Charlie Binns.

The Bees were keeping the pressure on the side in blue and levelled the game in fine fashion. A free-flowing team move saw Urinbioev feed Lisbie who found a yard of space to shoot and find the far corner of the net.

Roberts had the first chance of the second period as the away side pounced on a loose ball in midfield and the midfielder’s effort was tipped onto the post by Angelini.

Angelini was called into action again as he had to make a smart stop to deny Tommy Taylor and keep the scores level.

Urinboev then hit the crossbar on the other end from a free-kick just outside the box.

Ipswich restored the lead midway through the half and it was through Brentford's own doing as they pounced on a mistake at the back, which allowed Taylor to score the easy opportunity presented to him.

Barbrook got his second of the game, similar to his first, rising highest to steer a header from a corner past the goalkeeper.

The game would end 5-3 as Brentford suffered a first defeat in three games.
