Mark Robins gave his Coventry City players credit for getting themselves back in the game and not caving in against Norwich City but was hugely disappointed with their lack of bravery and commitment to the cause in the opening 20 minutes when they conceded three goals.

Jamie Allen and Kasey Palmer got the Sky Blues back in contention before the break but the Canaries’ quality showed overall in a hugely disappointing 4-2 CBS Arena defeat.

Asked if was a case of a difficult afternoon against top opposition, Robins said: “Yes, absolutely they are and they are even better when you give them a head start. This, for me, is a game where we had to be brave and go after them where we could. If you get that wrong it shouldn’t mean that they get a goal, that they have a shot on your target and have a goal.

“But if you aren’t committed mentally to it and aren’t brave and don’t go after it collectively, then you’re dead. When we did it, we got it right.

“But we were three goals down within a blink of an eye and looked like we could go under. The good thing is we didn’t and we started to do what we had spoken about by pressing and getting after them because we knew they would give up chances against you.

"You don’t worry what’s behind you, it’s what’s there and that’s what killed us off. We got it wrong. Fine, no problem, but it’s not about weight in numbers it’s about being in good positions to turn the ball over to be able to get after them.

“We didn’t do that well enough until we got the first goal. Once that went in there was a little bit of belief and then when the second one went in we had a foothold and we were really nearly back in it, and we had worked really hard to get there.

“But we are in a situation to affect it in a positive way, if you start to run out of energy – because the intensity needed to be there all the game and we didn’t have it, as we saw with changes we had to make – and the defenders, certainly Callum Doyle had a tough afternoon. He got plenty right but plenty wrong. Michael Rose, plenty right but plenty wrong. But as a group we got a lot right but a lot wrong.

“The midfield had to do too much running so they ran their legs out. But our season is not defined against Norwich or Burnley, it’s what comes next and what’s been before that.

“But we’re in a moment where we are just in a poor run in terms of picking points up, but we’ll get back on it and back to it. I know people will look at it and say this and that aren’t great. Of course it’s not because you want to pick pints up, even against top teams.

“In the first 20 minutes we were poor and didn’t get started until we were 3-0 down, and we’re not that type of team that can play our joker and see if we can turn it round. Credit to them, they nearly did it but we ran out of legs and then we made the changes.”
