Cyberpunk Edgerunners May See Lucy's Revenge Plan As Anime Fans Demand Season 2

The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime series has just released on Netflix, but what do we know so far about the possibility of season 2?

Netflix’s anime content has just received an outstanding boost with CD Projekt RED and Studio Trigger’s new anime series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

Based on the infamous video game, this series offers a return to Night City in a story that arguably eclipses that of the 2020 title; with exceptional visuals and music that underpins the true enhancements that Edgerunners has brought the franchise.

At the time of writing, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has not yet been publicly renewed for season 2, but what are the chances that the anime series returns for a second round of enhancements?

As previously noted, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has yet to be officially renewed for season 2 by either Netflix or Studio Trigger, the animation team behind the new series, nor have they released any information regarding a planned second instalment.

Straight off the top, the chances of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners returning for a second season have been significantly limited by the season 1 finale – which was indeed fantastic, but didn’t leave the door particularly open for a direct continuation.

By the time that the credits roll in episode 12, the vast majority of his Cyberpunk crew have been brutally slaughtered, including our main character David Martinez at the hands of Adam Smasher.

In fact, the only main character left alive by the end of season 1 is Lucy, who we see travelling to the moon as she fulfils her promise to David to visit just once in real life after their BD-date.

If Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was to continue with a second season, we would expect to see Lucy on her own path of revenge against Adam Smasher for taking David away. Couple this with the fact that Arasaka and the Mili-Tech group are still at large, season 2 could see our Edgerunner create a new team of misfits in her mission to destroy these mega-corporations.

However, arguably a more realistic scenario would be for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to return in season 2 with a completely new storyline and cast of characters.

The series was promoted as a standalone title set within the universe of the infamous Cyberpunk 2077 video game. Thankfully, this means that the anime adaptation has limitless possibilities surrounding the characters, story and timeline for potential future seasons.

Perhaps we will see another Cyberpunk spin-off series that drops the ‘Edgerunners’ from its title – who wouldn’t want to see a ‘Cyberpunk: Enhancements’ series focusing on Doc or even a ‘Cyberpunk: Cyberpsychosis’ series about someone battling with their upgrades?

Interestingly, CD Projekt RED recently announced the first DLC expansion for their Cyberpunk 2077 video game. As the new anime series is indeed canon within the franchise, each DLC could provide ample opportunity for a new standalone spin-off series in the same vein as Edgerunners – essentially, the more video content we get for 2077, the higher the chance that CD Projekt RED will want an anime series to tie into new content.

As noted by one user review on IMDB, “The storyline is amazing. The graphics are something you don’t see anywhere else. What they have done in this anime has brought the game to life. I pray that they’ll make more like this. Because there’s nothing like it.”

Ultimately, whatever the future holds for the series, the most important factor in determining the renewal chances of a show comes down to Netflix and their viewership. In short, the streaming giant will always look to continue a series if they deem a return on their investment, i.e., enough people have to watch a show for it to deserve the money needed to produce modern anime series.

Thankfully, the series has been met with an exceptional opening from fans and critics alike. Just 24 hours after its global premiere, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is sitting at an impressive 8.7/10 on IMDB, 8.54/10 on MyAnimeList and 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Moreover, the majority of critical reviews have been extremely positive, with Polygon noting how “Edgerunners feels exciting and new enough as it pushes the boundaries of its exciting and hugely inventive visual representation of in-game concepts.”

IGN gave the series an amazing 9/10 rating, explaining how “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners delivers a satisfying return to Night City that does a better job exploring why Mike Pondsmith’s famous location became so iconic in the first place.”

“While detractors of Studio Trigger’s output regard the anime powerhouse as prioritizing style over substance. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners definitely has its neon-drenched cake and eats it too by telling its own original story that eclipses that of the video game it’s associated with.” – Kotaku.

Overall, there is a good chance that there will be another Cyberpunk anime series, but it is unlikely that this will be season 2 of Edgerunners and will probably be a new standalone series…Keep those metallic fingers crossed!
