Shane MacGowan’s wife has shared an update about her husband’s health, assuring fans that doctors believe he will be alright after his hospital trip.

Earlier this week, Victoria Mary Clarke – who has been married to The Pogues singer since 2018 – revealed on Twitter that the 64-year-old had been admitted to hospital, as she wrote: ‘Please send prayers and healing vibes to @ShaneMacGowan in hospital again and really hoping to get out asap!! Thank you.’

In a new update, she has since revealed that her husband was suffering from an infection, as she expressed her immense gratitude for all who have sent him well-wishes.

‘I just wanted to thank everyone who has been sending good wishes for @ShaneMacGowan,’ she wrote.

‘He is being treated for an infection and the doctors are confident that he will be ok. I am just incredibly grateful to them and to all of you.’

One fan wrote in response: ‘That’s so good to hear, thank you for keeping us posted. We’ll keep sending him the good wishes, you’ll keep being his strength.’

‘Great to hear Victoria cause there’s only one of him and there’ll only ever be one – can’t be replaced,’ another wrote.

In recent years, the Fairytale of New York musician has faced various health issues, including breaking his pelvis after a fall in 2016.

He is looked after by a carer at his home in Dublin.

Earlier this year, Shane and Victoria took part in a joint interview with The Guardian, during which The Pogues singer said his wife ‘lights up my life’.

Victoria added about her spouse: ‘I definitely want to help him to stay alive for as long as possible.’

The latest updates on Shane’s health come weeks before Christmas, when the famous song Fairytale of New York by The Pogues will be played at Christmas parties far and wide.

Last week, BBC Radio 2 confirmed that it would be playing a censored version of the song, after a lyric in the track has continued to spark criticism and controversy over the years.

Shane and Victoria have been together for a long time, having wed in 2018 after being engaged for 11 years.
