This series of BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are has seen celebrities like Josh Widdicombe and dive into their family trees.

In tonight’s series 18 finale, TV presenter and former Labour Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer Ed Balls uncovers some surprising stories from within his family tree.

The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant looks into rumours of a link to Nelson's ship HMS Victory before discovering the story of his three-times great grandfather, an assistant surgeon.

He also feels a deep connection with Christopher Green, an agricultural labourer on his mother’s side who stood trial at Norwich Castle after standing up to defend his livelihood and community.

But who is Ed Balls married to and what is his net worth? Here’s everything you need to know about the Who Do You Think You Are star.

Who is Ed Balls married to?

Ed Balls has been married to author and fellow politician Yvette Cooper since 1998.

The pair — who have three children together — made history when they became the first-ever married couple to serve together in the cabinet in 2008.

While Ed has moved on from politics, his wife Yvette still works as an MP, serving Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford since 2010.

She previously served as Shadow Home Secretary between 2011 and 2015, a position she has very recently taken up again following Keir Starmer’s November 2021 cabinet reshuffle.

Ed Balls’ exact net worth isn’t known, but it is estimated to run into millions of pounds, according to internet reports.

Most of his fortune has been made through his political career, however, he has also had a successful career switch to TV, guest-hosting Good Morning Britain and presenting BBC documentaries including Ed Balls: Crisis in Care.

Ed Balls Day is celebrated by social media users every year on April 28.

It all started in 2011 when the ex-politician tried typing his name into Twitter to find an article about himself.

However, instead of searching his name, he sent it out as a now-infamous tweet.

Now, every year on April 28, Twitter users take to the platform to share humorous messages and memes under the hashtag EdBallsDay.

Ed Balls himself has even taken to marking the big day, often using it as a platform to share the work he does.

To celebrate the anniversary in 2020, he partnered with BBC Bitesize to teach children missing out on school due to coronavirus how to calculate the volume of balls.

Who Do You Think You Are? airs on BBC One on Tuesdays at 9pm
