English Premier League table 2022/23: Updated EPL standings and race for title, Champions League places, and relegation survival

It's the dream start that Arsenal fans were hoping for: a solid road victory to open the 2022/23 season against a difficult Crystal Palace side. And perhaps the sensational preseason run was no fluke after all.

Only one match is down and 379 to go, and so there are sure to be plenty of twists to come. Last season was the first in Premier League history in which every single position in the table was up for grabs on the final matchday. There's no reason to believe that something similar won't occur again.

In the end, Liverpool fell a single point short of title winners Manchester City, who won a second straight Premier League crown and the two are the favorites. At the other end of the table, newly-promoted sides Fulham, Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest will look to secure a longer stay in the Premier League and get back to being mainstays. Forest return to the English top flight for the first time in 24 years.

Below is the full Premier League table followed by a snapshot of each race as of last season's conclusion while we await for the first matchweek of 2022/23 to be played out.

Last season's Premier League title charge was thrilling, as Manchester City finished just one point ahead of Liverpool in a race that came down to the final matchday of the season.

This year, the title race is projected to be a two-horse race between those aforementioned teams, unless someone else proves they can hang with the giants. Tottenham appears the early favorite to give Man City and Liverpool a challenge, but Arsenal and Manchester United have also improved this summer.

Conversely, there are doubts about whether Chelsea can hang on to its Top 4 place this season, and will need to make a serious statement before fans believe they can make a case for the top spot.

In addition to the two title challengers, Chelsea and Tottenham secured the final two Champions League places last season, coming in third and fourth.

This campaign, the two clubs appear headed in opposite directions. Tottenham looked like one of the league's best teams through the second half of last season, and a successful summer has Spurs looking like the leader for the table's third spot. Chelsea, meanwhile, are a squad in transition, and an unkind preseason stoked fears that the Blues could drop out of the coveted Top 4.

Those looking to take advantage of any missteps include Arsenal and Manchester United who have both improved this summer and could look for an early surge to gain an advantage.

In the English top flight for 2022/23, in addition to the four Champions League spots, there are three other berths to European competitions:
• Europa League (2 berths): One automatically goes to the 5th-place Premier League team, and the other goes to the FA Cup winner. But if the FA Cup winner finishes in the Top 5, then the Europa League berth granted via the FA Cup will transfer to the next highest table finisher not already qualified for the Europa League.
• Conference League (1 berth): This goes to the EFL Cup winner (Carabao Cup). However, if the EFL Cup winner already qualifies for the Champions League or Europa League, then the Conference League berth transfers to the next highest table finisher not already qualified for European competition.

Additionally, because Liverpool won both the FA Cup and EFL Cup competitions and had already confirmed a place in the Champions League with a second-place finish in the table, sixth-place Manchester United earned a Europa League berth while seventh-place West Ham earned a spot in the Conference League.

Who will finish just short of a Top 4 spot this season? And will any other sides like Leicester City or Newcastle earn themselves a spot in a UEFA competition next season?

As always, the bottom three teams in the Premier League are relegated to the second tier the following season, a massive blow that clubs look to avoid at all costs.

Last season, Burnley, Watford, and Norwich City finished in the relegation zone and all three teams are playing in the second division during this campaign. In their places rose Fulham, Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest, who will hope to earn a more permanent place in the top flight.

Leeds United, Everton, and Southampton barely escaped the drop last season and will hope this year is a little more comfortable. Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Brentford could also be swept into the relegation battle with any sustained dry spells.
