Far-Right Rep. Madison Cawthorn Loses NC Primary

Rep. Madison Cawthorn, an outspoken far-right lawmaker, lost his primary bid for re-election to state Sen. Chuck Edwards yesterday. Since taking office in North Carolina’s 11th District last year, Cawthorn has generated numerous controversies.



Cawthorn was just 25 years old when he was elected to Congress in November 2020. He quickly made a name for himself as one of the most controversial and extremist voices in the Republican Party, alongside fellow Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Lauren Boebert (R-CO).

Following Cawthorn’s loss, CNBC published an article with a list of some of his many scandals, such as: “making claims about other lawmakers doing illicit drugs and inviting him to orgies; driving with a revoked license; bringing a loaded handgun to an airport; being eyed by ethics watchdogs over suspicions about possible insider trading related to a meme cryptocurrency; calling Ukraine’s president a ‘thug’ amid an invasion by Russia; and others.”

He was also accused of flirting with white nationalist ideology after news emerged that he visited Adolf Hitler’s vacation home, known as the Eagle’s Nest, prior to taking office.

As of this morning, AP data reported that Cawthorn conceded defeat and put his support behind the GOP nominee.
