Hackney paid its respects to all the servicemen, women and civilians who lost their lives in the two World Wars and later conflicts, at the borough’s Remembrance Sunday parade and church service on Sunday 12 November.

The commemoration began at 9:30am outside Hackney Town Hall, where a parade of over 300 representatives, organised by Hackney’s Deputy Lieutenant Stephen Howlett DL CBE, consisting of senior officers from the armed forces, police and fire service, and civic dignitaries including MP Meg Hillier, Mayor of Hackney Caroline Woodley and Speaker of Hackney Anya Sizer, made its way to a wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph at St John at Hackney Church.

A remembrance service and prayers of remembrance were followed by the playing of the Last Post. A two minute silence was held in honour of those whose lives were lost serving their country, before the parade returned to Town Hall for the laying of wreaths at the Town Hall Square war memorial.

The civic group attended a further special centenary service at Stoke Newington Library, marking 100 years since the library was built, as wreaths were laid across the borough in other services.

Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the First World War’s official armistice, which came about on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
