Hannah Waddingham ‘banned’ from Ted Lasso co-star’s live shows

The British actress is currently best known for her portrayal of AFC Richmond’s relentless owner Rebecca Welton, and is also familiar to fans for hit series like Game of Thrones and Sex Education. This Friday, she chatted to This Morning presenters Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond about the latest season of her hit Apple TV+ show, Ted Lasso.

Despite spending much of the last three years together on the set of Ted Lasso, Waddingham still hasn’t been able to see her co-star’s live performances. Goldstein was back this Wednesday for another episode of the popular football comedy, in which he stars as former striker-turned-coach, Roy Kent. Speaking to O’Leary and Hammond on This Morning, the TV star revealed the actor and comic is rather protective about the other side of his career. “He does stand-up as well,” O’Leary explained. “And he said, the thing is now, people come to his stand-up thinking he’s Roy.”

“So people are gonna go, ‘Ah! Ooh… What’s going on?’ Because it frames how people see you I suppose.” “Yeah, yeah, he won’t let me go,” Waddingham added. “He thinks that if people see me in there… I would come in deep disguise.”

“But he won’t let me come along, because he thinks people will be going…” Waddingham then made a gesturing back-and-forth motion. Goldstein apparently wants to keep his stand-up stints separate from his Ted Lasso role, and his co-star’s appearance at the show could prove to be a distraction for the audience. The actor currently doesn’t have any tour dates listed, but Waddingham’s comments could mean he has another show in the works. He last appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2018 with his show What Is Love Baby Don't Hurt Me.

However, in his GQ profile, he also admitted his early stand-up performances can never be shown in today’s climate. “I made a series of decisions that, further down the road, turned out to be the wrong ones, which have haunted me,” he said. “I did shows before anyone knew who I was and I didn’t think ahead in terms of…I was just making the thing that was right at the time. “But they’re all things that are often about truth and about real people and I can’t just have them on the Internet."
