Harvey Barnes considering switching international allegiance from England to Scotland

Barnes has made only one appearance for the Three Lions

Harvey Barnes is willing to change his country of citizenship and might compete for Scotland in the European Championship.

The Newcastle United attacker has a solitary England cap, which he received against Wales in a friendly three years ago. However, Barnes, 25, has since been dropped by Gareth Southgate and was not even included in the provisional 55-man squad for the Three Lions prior to the World Cup last winter.

There are several left-wing options available to Southgate, therefore there is little likelihood that the former Leicester star will play in the Euros in Germany next year. Despite having played a further two contests, Steve Clarke’s team leads their group, which features recent two-time European winners Spain, by nine points and is on track for a spot for Euro 2024.

Barnes is considering switching his allegiance to Scotland as a result since he is qualified to make up the Tartan Army through his maternal grandparents and because he is no longer a competitive player for England.

The Times reports that the 25-year-old is flexible over the chance despite previously rejecting offers from Scottish FA officials.

With only three games left, Scotland’s decisive 3-0 victory against Cyprus on Friday puts them in a position to almost certainly advance as one of the top two teams in Group A. Clarke and company would benefit from Barnes’ enlistment because they don’t currently have any top-tier choices for wide forward positions.

Barnes might now change his allegiance by following a number of players who were born in England. One of them is Scotland’s star Scott McTominay, who has accrued 42 caps after deciding to forego playing for England in 2018. Barnes can also take a cue from Matty Cash, the right-back for Aston Villa who is currently playing for Poland.

After being introduced as a replacement in the second half, Newcastle’s $39 million player had already made a big impression at St. James’ Park when he scored and assisted in his first game. In three further sub appearances since then, Barnes has not increased either of his totals.
