Hawkeye's Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld admit who ruined takes

Filming stunt-heavy shows like Marvel's Hawkeye requires actors to undergo tons of training to make sure they don't mess up when the cameras are rolling. But even though slip-ups are bound to happen, the stars of the upcoming Disney+ show blamed the dog who played Lucky for much of the ruined takes.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld have opened up about what it was like to film with a canine scene partner, with the young Dickinson actress admitting that it was both "very fun" and "very tricky".

"I found that it was always the moments where I had about 19 things in my hand… We would start rolling, and then the dog would run in, and they were like: 'Oh, and here you go. Here's the dog,'" explained Steinfeld.

"So we're just fumbling, and we've got all this stuff going on, and then the dog takes off."

She went on to recall how "we actually did a bit where we were in a park, and there were squirrels and other dogs in that park. And we had to get from point A to B. And we took a couple of jolty detours in that walk," she laughed.

Confirming that "Hailee had to do more dog-handling," Renner explained how he got to do "more dog-loving".

"Whenever I had to be with the dog, I think he was just always hot-breathing on me, and being adorable. I just fell in love with the dog. She had to do a lot of the legwork. It's actually a really well-trained dog."

But despite his training, the dog still causes some ruckus on set. "It's just… working with dogs, like she said, all it takes is a squirrel," continued the Avengers star.

"It changes the whole dynamic, you know? The only issue I encountered with the dog breath and the panting is, I had to redo takes, because all they could hear was: [dog panting]. I'm like: 'I'm trying to have an emotional moment here. You're crushing my close-up.'"

To get around the dog's excitement to be in the presence of the real Hawkeye – who wouldn't? – the production team "had a little stunt doggie that would come in as stuffie".

"It's about the same size, so we'd bring him in, as a little stand-in. And he did a good job, too," explained Renner. "It wasn't fogging up the lens with dog breath."

While we have only seen glimpses of Lucky in the trailers so far, in the comics, Lucky initially belongs to a member of the tracksuit mafia, who appear to be the main villains of the six-part show. After Hawkeye shows him some kindness, Lucky repays the hero by attacking his owner's men who were shooting at Clint.

The tracksuit mafia thugs though beat up the dog which is left barely alive when Cint rescues him and adopts him. Lucky then becomes a friend and companion to him and to the younger Hawkeye, Kate Bishop.

Hawkeye is set to release on Disney+ on November 24, 2021.
