'hHight of stupidity' - Roy Keane slams Man Utd ace Fred after FA Cup final

Former captain Roy Keane blasted Manchester United midfielder Fred following Saturday's 2-1 FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City at Wembley.

The Brazilian, who is the subject of interest from Fulham ahead of the summer transfer window opening for business later this month, retained his place in the starting line-up from the win over the Cottagers last weekend and partnered Casemiro at the base of the midfield. Fred started the previous Manchester derby at Old Trafford back in January and produced an excellent performance.

At Wembley, however, the former Shakhtar Donetsk ace failed to justify his inclusion, failing to combat City's midfield threat in the way that he had done at the start of the year. He was guilty of giving away too many cheap fouls, one of which resulted in City scoring their second goal.

The Brazilian was guilty of tripping Kevin De Bruyne on the right touchline and the resulting free-kick, which was crossed in by the Belgian, found Ilkay Gundogan, who crashed in his second goal of the game from the edge of the penalty area. And Keane wasted no time in criticising the United midfielder for his actions, describing it as the "height of stupidity."

"Fred had Kevin de Bruyne where he wants him," Keane told ITV Sport. "De Bruyne has his back to goal and then Fred fouls him.

"It's the height of stupidity. But we've seen that from him so many times over the years."

The 30-year-old, despite making 56 appearances for United this season, could be one of several players to leave Old Trafford this forthcoming summer. United have plans to recruit a new midfielder and Fred could be a prime candidate to make way.

At this moment in time, Scott McTominay, who is United's other back-up midfielder, is expected to be retained by the club. Newcastle United have, however, been regularly linked with his signature.
