'I wouldn't be surprised' - Glen Johnson tips Chelsea to re-sign striker

Glen Johnson insists he ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ if Chelsea re-signed Tammy Abraham later in his career and says the striker will want to return to Stamford Bridge to ‘settle some scores’.

Abraham decided to leave Chelsea over the summer after falling out of favour under Blues boss Thomas Tuchel, completing a £34m move to Jose Mourinho’s Roma.

The 24-year-old has made a superb start to his career in Rome, scoring four goals in ten matches and hitting the crossbar six times.

Abraham spent over a decade at Chelsea’s academy before breaking into the first-team in 2016 and scored 30 goals in 82 games for the Premier League giants.

Former Chelsea defender Johnson believes Abraham could return to Stamford Bridge at some point, however, and insists the Blues ‘would be interested’ in a deal if he continues to thrive in Italy.

‘He’s scoring goals, enjoying his football again and he’s got a lot to offer,’ Johnson told bettingodds.com. ‘And naturally all the big teams are going to want strikers who are scoring goals.

‘Chelsea have shown in the past that they’re not embarrassed to sign somebody back for a lot more money than they sold them for.

‘If he continues to score goals then I think, yeah, they would be interested. Strikers are hard to come by, aren’t they?

‘As a young Englishman, we’re all brought up to want to play in the Premier League, so I’m sure he’ll want to come back one day to settle some scores.

‘I can also see him being part of the England set-up at Qatar 2022. He’s got age on his side.

‘He’s a big physical lad, and for me he’s decent in front of goal as well. If he continues to score goals then he’s going to be hard to look past isn’t he?’

Speaking last week, Abraham said he ‘didn’t really understand’ why he struggled for game-time under Chelsea manager Tuchel.

‘I think the easy option would’ve been to stick around and sit down,’ Abraham said.

‘Chelsea’s a massive club, they will compete and try to win trophies so the easy option would’ve been to do that.

‘I realised that I needed to go out and prove myself, I needed to play some games. I took a decision and it was the right one.’
