Levy and Spurs to receive huge financial windfall if they seal top-four spot

The Champions League is now firmly in sight for Antonio Conte and his Tottenham team heading into the final game of the 2021/22 season. In a two-way fight with Arsenal for a place in Europe's premier competition with Manchester United and West Ham dropping out of the running, Spurs are now in the driving seat ahead of Sunday's trip to Norwich City.

The ideal fixture going into the final day with the Canaries bottom of the table, a point will be enough due to their two-point advantage over Arsenal unless their rivals beat Everton 16-0. However, Conte and his players will be intent on getting the job done in style as they aim to clinch a place in Europe's premier competition for the first time since 2019/20.

Missing out on Champions League income over the past two seasons, it was always imperative for Spurs to secure a top-four finish given what's happened across the globe over the past two years. So how much could the Lilywhites be set to earn if they do indeed wrap up Champions League football come 5.45pm on Sunday?

As per Twitter user Swiss Ramble, who is an expert in the business of football, clubs would earn €15.6m (£13.3m) just for participating in the Champions League in terms of the UEFA competitions prize money for 2021/22. Although there is no prize money for winning or coming second in the Champions League group stage, the maximum revenue from the groups is €16.8m (£14.3m) as a win is worth €2.8m (£2.3m) compared to £930k (£796k) for a draw.

A place in the last 16 of the Champions League is then worth €9.6m (£8.2m), quarter-finals €10.6m (£9m) and semi-finals €12.5m (£10.6m). The Champions League winner will then receive €20m (£17.1m) and the runner-up €15.5m (£13.2m), meaning the maximum possible amount of money to be earned by winning the Champions League is €69.5m (£59.7m), which comes to €85.1m (£71.9m) in total when you add the participation money on top.

That isn't the only money up for grabs in Europe's premier competition as clubs also bring in more money due to the TV pool and UEFA coefficient. The UEFA coefficient pot for 2021/22 worth €600.6m (£507.5m) was split into €1.1m (£960k) shares for all 32 clubs in the group stage, with the highest-ranked club receiving €36.4m (£30.7m) and the lowest-ranked club €1.1m (£960k).

UEFA said ahead of this season that a total of €300.3m (£259m) in TV cash was to be shared out among the Champions League clubs, with each country given a certain amount to distribute among its representatives, which is dependent on the value of that nation's TV market.

Part of that money is based on a team's position in the previous season's Premier League - winners getting 40%, 2nd 30%, 3rd 20% and 4th 10% - and the other part dependent on how far each progress in the Champions League. Having to do without Champions League football in the past two campaigns, a return to Europe's premier competition really does have the potential of bringing in a lucrative amount for Daniel Levy and Tottenham.
