Line of Duty boss discusses Trigger Point not dropping all at once on ITV Hub

Described as a "high-octane six-part thriller", Trigger Point is the latest series from ITV which will premiere this Sunday (January 23) – but it won't come all at once.

Written by Daniel Brierley and produced by Line of Duty boss Jed Mercurio, the six-parter follows McClure's Lana Washington, an experienced bomb disposal operative as she partners with Joel Nutkins.

Having served together in Afghanistan, the pair share a close bond, but their faith in one another is threatened when a terrorist group threatens London over a sweltering summer.

Mark Stanley, Warren Brown, Kerry Godliman, Cal MacAninch, Manjinder Virk and Ralph Ineson round out the supporting cast.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media about the show's weekly transmission and not dropping it on the Hub all at once, Jed explained how he believes there's a big section of the audience who "love the experience of appointment to view TV".

The showrunner continued: "If something becomes a talking point and people have lot's of theories about what's going to happen next and who's behind some kind of mystery — elements we do have in Trigger Point — then I think it all lands to the shared experience of television viewing."

Jed went on to acknowledge, though the [current viewing] trend is "away from that" — in that a "substantial section of the audience wants to make up their own mind" about when they view — they recognise how "refreshing" people find it when they can "join in with experience of talking about TV that other people have seen".

He concluded: "It's almost like we're turning the clock back to an earlier age of television, and I think there's still plenty of people who really appreciate that."

Trigger Point will premiere on ITV on Sunday, January 23.
