Martin Lewis has urged those who are not eligible for the £150 council tax rebate to get in touch anyway. The Money Saving Expert founder has said the councils have been given a £144 million discretionary fund.

Those who are unable to pay energy bills but not eligible for payment given to people living in council tax bands A to D may be able to receive up to £150 in this situation.

Anyone who is interested is urged to apply, but Martin did warn that it can sometimes be slow to be granted money this way.

He issued the advice in a tweet. He wrote: "Struggling to pay energy bills, but not in council tax bands A-D, so not due the £150 payment? Councils got £144m discretionary fund, to give upto £150 to people in this situation

"Check out how to apply (though some are very slow to get any of this scheme's money out)"

Households in bands A to D were promised the £150 payment to help with soaring energy bills as the price cap increased by more than 50 per cent.
