Martin Roberts 'minutes from death' before emergency heart surgery

Martin Roberts claimed he wouldn’t be alive if his chest pains happened while he was in Ukraine after undergoing emergency heart surgery.

The Homes Under The Hammer presenter, 58, was taken to hospital last month where medics found ‘massive amounts’ of fluid on his heart. The TV host also revealed at the time he could have had ‘minutes to live’ had he not had the operation.

Before his terrifying ordeal, Martin travelled for over 25 hours from the UK to Poland to take vital supplies to help the refugees crossing the border.

Speaking about his recent trip to the Ukraine border during Wednesday’s This Moring, Phillip Schofield said: ‘You’re delivering, ironically, defibrillators heart equipment. If it had happened there, the roadside in Poland, you were done for.’

‘You need a great team to spot it and you need some specialist equipment and skills to sort it out.

‘So, the reality is, if it had happened, I wouldn’t be here Phillip.’

Reflecting on his near-death experience, Martin – who was joined by his wife Kirsty – urged viewers to get themselves checked out if they’ve been through something similar.

He said: ‘You think it’s a breathing problem, it not. That was just a symptom of the heart not working. So, my advice is, if you have chest pains, get yourself checked.’

‘But things are moving in the right direction,’ he added.

After he was discharged from the hospital, Martin updated his fans on his recovery.

‘The breathing side of things I’m just going to carry on with it and then have more follow-up meetings with the respiratory team,’ he said.

‘For now, they’ve decided that they’ve done what they can, and I’m better placed at home now.’

Expressing his gratitude for the health team, the presenter continued: ‘First thing to say is thank you with all my heart of all your messages of support. You have been amazing, and it’s kept me going in some very dark hours. Honestly I can’t thank you enough.’

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
