Mikael Silvestre delivers verdict on Maguire's Manchester United captaincy

Mikael Silvestre thinks Harry Maguire is the right captain for Manchester United.

Maguire enjoyed an outstanding European Championship across the summer, however, he's struggled for form this season and his performances at the back have been intensely scrutinised with some calling for the centre-back to be dropped to the bench.

When Maguire has been available, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has stuck by the 28-year-old by including him in the starting XI, though.

But the England international has not been performing at his usual standard and his captaincy of the club has been questioned.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is back under pressure as Manchester United manager. The Reds' victory at Tottenham was soon forgotten as they fell to a dire 2-0 defeat in the Manchester derby, and saw the vultures circling around the Norwegian once again. Since Cristiano Ronaldo's return, it has been suggested that the forward should take the armband, but Silvestre - who played with former captains Roy Keane and Gary Neville - thinks that Solskjaer should continue to back his chosen skipper in Maguire.

"I think Cristiano doesn't need the armband to be one of the main voices," Silvestre told the Manchester Evening News.

"I wouldn't change the captaincy because Harry has been a good leader. We know that he's had a dip in form coming back from injury.

"Cristiano, five-time Ballon d'Or winner, he doesn't need the armband to be heard, to be followed and to show the way.

"I wouldn't change anything at the moment."
