Giovanni van Bronckhorst's appointment as the new Rangers manager was officially announced on Thursday evening.

The 46-year-old becomes the Ibrox club's 17th permanent boss in their history and succeeds Steven Gerrard, after he departed for Aston Villa.

Van Bronckhorst is a hugely popular appointment amongst Rangers supporters following a successful three-year spell as a player under Dick Advocaat, two decades ago.

There has been constant speculation surrounding van Bronckhorst's backroom staff with various names touted to join the former Arsenal and Barcelona star.

One man confirmed to be joining the new Gers boss at Ibrox is former Netherlands teammate Roy Makaay.

He will be one of van Bronckhorst's assistants and Football Scotland has taken a closer look at the Dutchman.

Rudolphus Antonius Makaay was born in Wijchen, Netherlands on March 9, 1975.

The 46-year-old enjoyed a brilliant career as a professional footballer before moving into coaching.

Makaay began his journey at Eredivisie side Vitesse, making his senior debut in 1993.

The lethal striker scored 42 goals in 109 appearances before moving to Spain to join Tenerife in the First Division.

After 21 goals in 72 games, Deportivo La Coruna paid €10 million for his services in 1999.

Makaay enjoyed a sensational first season for Depor, scoring 22 goals in 36 appearances, as the claimed their first ever La Liga title during a historic campaign.

Deportivo clinched the Copa del Rey title with victory over Real Madrid in the following season before Makaay claimed the European Golden Boot during the 2002-23 season, after scoring 29 goals.

Bayern Munich made their move for Makaay in 2003, signing the Dutchman for a club record €18.75 million.

He would scored 78 goals for the German giants in the Bundesliga and he also became only the second player to have netted Champions League hat-tricks for two clubs, when he bagged three goals against Ajax in 2004.

Celtic fans will also remember him well, after he notched a late double to sicken Martin O'Neill's side in Munich, with a Magnus Hedman blunder gifting the Germans a 2-1 Champions League win.

Makaay returned to Holland to sign for Feyenoord for €5million and he retired at the Dutch giants at the end of the 2007-08 season.

Despite a prolific scoring record during his club career, Makaay never hit the heights for the national team.

He scored six goals in 43 appearances but he was regularly a substitute for the likes of Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Kluivert.

Makaay stayed at Feyenoord after his retirement and began scouting for the club.

He eventually progressed to coaching the youth teams in 2011 and became the under-19's boss in 2013.

Makaay would also help out as a forward coaching with the senior time and he worked closely with van Bronckhorst when the Rangers boss was assistant manager.

This relationship continued when van Bronckhorst was appointed as Feyenoord boss in 2015.
