Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney, 79, shared a fond memory of himself and John Lennon with his 4.1 million Twitter followers today. The artist, 79, posted a black and white picture of them both from the early days of the Beatles.

Below he attached a black and white photograph of them both from when they were young and practising their instruments together. In the picture the two musicians can be seen holding their electric guitars up to their chins to play like violins. Beatles fans commented below with messages of admiration for the music icon. “Happy birthday John. Memories of celebrating his 70th in Liverpool in 2010,” Peter Lewis wrote, attaching pictures from around Liverpool commemorating the artist’s life.

User @tirnaog_09 commented: “At a freezing bus stop on a dark winter morning in Glasgow when I heard he had been taken from us.

“So much unfulfilled promise, so many great tunes not written.

“But hey, you guys leave a legacy which will last literally for centuries.

“Happy Birthday John,” he added with the hashtag #AWorkingClassHero.

John Lennon was born on October 9, 1940, which means today would be his eighty-first birthday.

The musician was shot and fatally wounded in the archway of his New York residence on the evening of 8 December 1980, making him just 40 years old when he died.

His killer, Mark David Chapman was himself a Beatles fan hailing from Hawaii, but was angered by the singer’s atheist remarks and his lyrics in songs like ‘Imagine’, which was considered to be quite controversial at the time of its release. John also famously once remarked that the Beatles were “more popular than Jesus” - a statement that angered Christian groups in the UK but particularly in America.

Despite controversy, the image of unity and peace that John fought to make real with the help of wife Yoko Ono still inspires millions of people today.

The talented songwriter is also responsible for some of the biggest-selling hits of all time, including Help!, All You Need Is Love, Come Together and Strawberry Fields Forever.

John left the Beatles in September of 1969 to pursue a solo career, shortly after the band had finished recording their smash hit album Abbey Road.

McCartney announced the news of the break-up in April 1970 and the last song recorded by all four Beatles was also the final track on the Abbey Road album entitled The End.

The Beatles went on to release their final album Let It Be in the month that followed, with some pre-recorded vocals from John, which featured famous tracks like Get Back and The Long and Winding Road

Despite it being stated on public record many times that the band chose to go their separate ways, many fans did and still do place the blame for the split with John’s widow, Yoko.

The public backlash against his wife didn’t seem to phase the couple too much, however, and the star went on to have a very successful solo career where he released many iconic tunes, including Imagine, Happy Xmas (War Is Over) and Jealous Guy.
