Rangers and Frankfurt fans clash in Seville ahead of Europa League final

Spanish police have said they are aware of “isolated incidents” of fan disorder after dozens of Rangers and Frankfurt fans were involved in an altercation ahead of the Europa League final.

Footage from Seville’s Puerta de la Carne appeared to show supporters hurling chairs, with some ultras dressed in balaclavas.

According to Diario de Sevilla, the incident took place around 6pm local time and a police car was damaged as officers tried to protect a passer-by.

There are no confirmed injuries so far.

It follows unrest on Tuesday night which led to five Frankfurt fans being arrested, with one Rangers fan suffering a wound to the head.

understands that ahead of kick-off, police were generally satisfied that the situation had been kept under as much control as possible given the number of fans in the city without tickets.

It was estimated that around 150,000 supporters had arrived in Seville, despite only 10,000 tickets initially being allocated to each club.

Frankfurt president Peter Fischer caused anger in Seville when discussing the large number of fans without tickets in the city by blaming Uefa for choosing a “Mickey Mouse Stadium” to host the final.

Efforts have been made to keep the two fanbases separate. Many of the city’s bars were closed on Wednesday, but Rangers fans without tickets were invited to watch the match at the 60,000-capacity La Cartuja Stadium, around three miles away from the base of Frankfurt supporters.

In the build-up to the final, Rangers had urged fans to avoid trouble with a series of video messages from former players including Graeme Souness and Richard Gough.

Souness had told supporters to “have a party, but behave yourselves” or risk “headlines which can damage us for a long, long time”, while Gough added: “We’re going to need to behave out there. We’re all ambassadors for the club when we’re in Spain. Let’s hope we get a great result but we need to behave.

“The team themselves have done a remarkable job of getting to a European final and us as supporters just need to support them. Hopefully we get the right result but we need to be on our best behaviour as well.”

Reports in Spain claimed fans of both clubs had been bathing and swimming in the city’s historic fountains, with Diario de Sevilla blaming “the high amount of alcohol”.

Uefa told that they were “closely cooperating with local authorities and security forces, the local organising committee and the clubs to ensure a safe and secure environment”.

There were also some minor incidents inside the ground during the game, with Frankfurt fans removing sections of the Europa League branding from their end of the stadium, while a number of lit flares produced so much smoke that the view was obscured at one end of the pitch.
