Robson Green visited a beauty spot that he said "never fails to fill me with joy" in the first episode of his new BBC series set in the North East.

The 58-year-old actor, who was born in Hexham, has toured the region for his BBC2 show Robson Green's Weekend Escapes, and the first episode on Monday saw him stop off in Bamburgh. The Wire in the Blood star reminisced about family days out in Northumberland growing up, describing the coastline as his "most favourite place in the world."

Bamburgh was a particular favourite in his family, Robson said, as he said that the stunning beach rivals "any in the Caribbean". Nostalgic Robson added that visiting Bamburgh gave his parents - his dad who worked as a miner and his mam who had two jobs as a cleaner and shopkeeper - a "sense of freedom", sharing that his dad loved to swim in the chilly sea.

The episode also saw Robson cycle from Bamburgh to Seahouses with a local bike hire service, before visiting the hidden gem glamping site Bamburgh Under Canvas. Robson was later joined by his "all-time hero", former Newcastle United legend Les Ferdinand - who made the surprising admission that he had never seen the Northumberland coast, despite having lived in Newcastle for several years when he was a striker in the 90s.

The pair tucked into kippers, before visiting Beadnell bay and trying their hand at paddleboarding - something that proved quite a challenge for Robson and Les, who found themselves plunged into the sea on several occasions when trying to balance on their boards. Robson also opened up about how bracing walks along the Northumberland coast had helped his mental health.

"When I immerse myself in the North East countryside, everything's good. Everything's well in the world," he said. And viewers agreed with the star, sharing their own love of the region on social media.

"Loving Robson Green's Weekend Escapes in Seahouses and Bamburgh - went there last year and had the best holiday - lovely part of the world," one person wrote on Twitter.

Another added: "My favourite place in the world, Northumberland - I love Bamburgh and Seahouses, stayed many times."

"The beautiful Northumberland coast and Bamburgh on Robson Green's Weekend Escapes - absolutely gorgeous, so lucky to have this on my doorstep," said a third.

Someone else tweeted: "Beautiful part of the world being showcased by Robson Green on Weekend Escapes. Can't think of a better part of the world to live!"
