Sara Cox has recalled how she was "a complete mess" after finding out her close friend and BBC colleague Steve Wright had passed away while she was presenting her Radio 2 show.

The broadcaster was live on-air when she discovered Steve had died at the age of 69 at his £2million home in north west London last month, with the mum-of-three forced to fight back the tears as she continued to present her afternoon show in the wake of her beloved friend's death.

She paid tribute to Steve as she bravely continued with her shift on 13th February and told listeners how she hoped to do her late friend "proud" as she carried on with her presenting duties while navigating shock and grief. Reflecting on the moment she discovered Steve had died, Sara recalled: "I was a complete mess."

"We were all in complete shock. I looked out into the production area and people were hugging and crying; it really winded us as a station," she added to the Radio Times. Sara continued to explain how she had no alternative but to carry on hosting her show "because you want to be a professional, you want to do right by Steve, you want to do right by listeners and you want to support them in a way, but at the same time to be real. Because although the whole nation seems to be grieving, it was his kids’ grief more than anyone else's."

Speaking to her listeners on the day Steve's death was announced, Sara said on her Radio 2 show: "It's really hard to know what to say about the news of Steve Wright's passing, except we are all absolutely devastated and shocked and blindsided by this news. Steve was an extraordinary broadcaster, a really, really, kind person. He was witty, he was warm, and he was a huge, huge part of the Radio 2 family, and I know my fellow DJs will all be absolutely shattered too."

Speaking on BBC Morning Live the following day, Sara admitted she was struggling to process the fact Steve had died. She told host Gethin Jones: "I've got to be honest with you, it feels to some extent like a family bereavement because we've lost one of our own. There was no build up, there was no warning, we are all just really, really shocked and really sad and we're all absolutely gutted."

A statement issued by Steve's family on 13th March announcing the radio legend's death read: "It is with deep sorrow and profound regret that we announce the passing of our beloved Steve Wright. In addition to his son, Tom, and daughter, Lucy, Steve leaves behind his brother, Laurence and his father Richard.

"Also, much-loved close friends and colleagues, and millions of devoted radio listeners who had the good fortune and great pleasure of allowing Steve into their daily lives as one of the UK's most enduring and popular radio personalities. As we all grieve, the family requests privacy at this immensely difficult time."
