The Conservatives are on track to suffer big defeats in Scotland in the local elections.

Labour has a chance to displace the Tories as the second biggest party in Scotland, behind the SNP.

The Liberal Democrats have also made early gains. The party’s Scottish leader, Alex Cole-Hamilton, said “he’s over the moon” the Lib Dems are picking up seats they didn’t know were in play.

Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross said Boris Johnson and Partygate had been issues for voters both north and south of the border.

“It doesn’t look like voters are shifting to other parties, they’re staying at home this time. Again we have to wait and see what happens in Scotland,” he said.

“General apathy at local council elections is a concern for all the parties but we will not be immune from some of the problems we have seen south of the border with voters deciding this is an election they can sit out.”

This map will update with all the latest results.

Hover over a council to see a breakdown of councillors for each party.

Results are expected to start coming in from Scotland from around 2pm.

When are all the results expected?

Volunteers begin counting votes almost as soon as the polls close and continue through the night.

Here is the full timetable:
• First results expected, with Labour hoping to do well in Conservative-run Bolton in Greater Manchester
• Tories could make gains in Basildon in Essex
• Results from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, South Tyneside and Wigan will indicate if Labour’s vote is holding up in its northern strongholds
• Sunderland has been run by Labour since 1973, but Conservatives and Liberal Democrats are hoping to make enough gains to leave the council in no overall control
• Labour and the Tories battling for control of Hartlepool and Peterborough
• Stevenage in Hertfordshire could show if Labour is making gains in commuter territory
• First key results from London; Westminster is a Labour longshot and has been run by the Conservatives continuously since 1964
• Tories fighting to hold dwindling number of councillors in Hammersmith and Fulham and Redbridge
• Result from Hull, which is a two-way fight between Labour and the Liberal Democrats
• Two crucial results set to come in from the West Midlands; Conservatives are defending a slim majority in Dudley and a larger one in Nuneaton and Bedworth, but Labour hopes to make progress in councils
• Result from Hillingdon, another Labour longshot in London, which contains constituency of Prime Minister Boris Johnson
• Labour is hoping to retake Southampton from Conservative control and make gains in Derby
• Conservatives defending Wandsworth in London, which they have held since 1978
• Counting begins for a further 71 councils in England and all councils in Scotland and Wales
• Results likely to resume in England
• Labour hoping to do likewise in Tory-run Walsall
• First results also due from Scotland and for the mayoral elections in Hackney, Lewisham, Newham and Watford
• Two key councils in West Sussex due to declare; Worthing, a top Labour target, and Crawley, where both the Tories and Labour are hoping to gain control
• East Renfrewshire, a three-way battle between the Conservatives, Labour and the SNP, to declare
• Another key Conservative-Labour battleground, Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire, due to finish counting
• In Wales, Labour looking to take control of Blaenau Gwent from a group of Independents
• Flintshire is a test of Tory popularity in an area in which they did well at the 2019 general election
• Aberdeenshire will be a measure of Conservative support in Scotland
• All parties hope to pick up seats in Edinburgh
• Conservatives and Liberal Democrats fighting for control of the new unitary authority in Somerset
• SNP looking to hold off any sign of a Labour resurgence in Glasgow
• Tories want to keep control of Pendle in Lancashire
• Lib Dems hope to cause an upset in Tory-run Gosport in Hampshire
• Result in Labour-run Wakefield could offer clues to the outcome of the expected parliamentary by-election in the city later this year, after Conservative MP Imran Ahmad Khan was convicted of sexual assault
• Tower Hamlets in London due to declare the result of its mayoral election
• Renfrewshire is the last result due from Scotland
• North Hertfordshire could see both Labour and the Lib Dems gaining from the Conservatives
• Labour hoping to improve its majority in Bury in Greater Manchester
• Vale of Glamorgan is the final result due from Wales
• In London, the Croydon mayoral result is expected
• Counting continues for the council election in Tower Hamlets in London

Which elections are being contested?

On 5 May people went to the polls to vote for:
• Every local authority in Scotland, Wales and London
• South Yorkshire’s regional mayor, plus the borough councils of Barnsley and Sheffield
• 60 district councils, 31 Metropolitan boroughs and 19 unitary authorities across the rest of England
• All 90 seats in the Northern Ireland assembly

There was also a referendum in Bristol on whether to keep or abolish the position of the city’s elected mayor.
