Sergio Aguero is set to announce his retirement from football next week, according to reports in Spain.

The former Manchester City star was ruled out until the New Year when he was forced to leave the pitch against Alaves last month after experiencing chest pains.

Aguero subsequently underwent cardiological tests which were reported to have shown that he suffers from an irregular heartbeat.

The 33-year-old joined Barcelona on a free transfer in the summer and was making just his sixth appearance for the club, but appears unlikely to add to that tally.

According to Aguero’s friend and journalist, Gerard Romero, Aguero is now set to call time on his illustrious career amid concerns over his health with a press conference scheduled to take place next week.

Aguero’s Argentina teammates paid tribute to the striker ahead of their recent World Cup qualifier with Brazil.

Lionel Messi and Co. were pictured with a banner before kick-off which had a picture of their compatriot along with the message, ‘We are all with you Kun’.

Aguero’s former City boss Pep Guardiola, meanwhile has urged his former player to put his health first in an impassioned plea.

‘We wish him as speedy and safe recovery as possible and he comes back, if possible, to play again, otherwise to enjoy his life and what he has done, and to be careful and be safe for the rest of his life.’

Barcelona, meanwhile, who have appointed Xavi as the club’s new manager following the demise of Ronaldo Koeman, were already planning for Aguero’s long-term absence and maintain an interest in the likes of Raheem Sterling and Dani Olmo.
