United youngsters to be on bench against Young Boys — with Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage in line for place in squad
Several of Manchester United’s young players are set to get their first taste of European football on Wednesday night — with Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage among those in line to make the bench.
Interim manager Ralf Rangnick is set to ring the changes against Young Boys, with United already through to the last 16 as Group F winners, and an entirely new line-up is possible.
Rangnick confirmed on Tuesday that Dean Henderson and Donny van de Beek will start, while Nemanja Matic will captain the side.
He also stressed that other first-team players are in need of minutes with Jesse Lingard, Mason Greenwood and Aaron Wan-Bissaka also set to feature.
United have added youngsters Bjorn Hardley, Charlie Wellens, Iqbal, Savage, Sam Mather and Shola Shoretire to their Champions League squad, meaning they could be named on the substitutes’ bench tonight if needed.
The Athletic understands Iqbal and Savage are expected to be included among the substitutes.
Anthony Elanga and Amad are also in contention to make their first-ever Champions League starts tonight.
Alvaro Fernandez would also have been added to the squad but has not spent enough time at United to qualify for the B list, as per UEFA regulations.
