Wayne Rooney hits back at 'strange' Cristiano Ronaldo interview amid 'rat' claim
Former Derby County boss Wayne Rooney has labelled Cristiano Ronaldo's high-profile interview as "strange" after the Portuguese star appeared to describe Rooney as a 'rat' and mock his appearance.
Ronaldo has dominated headlines in recent days following the release of an interview with Piers Morgan in which he emphasised his displeasure at criticism from the likes of ex-teammates Gary Neville and Rooney.
The 37-year-old was subsequently asked by Morgan whether he'd prefer a greater amount of money or Instagram followers in an attempt to "work out how Wayne Rooney could hate you [Ronaldo] more."
To which Ronaldo responded, "Not only him but imagine the rest of the rats, too."
Rooney, whose work at Pride Park in difficult circumstances had been lauded, would respond by claiming: "Obviously, he's done an interview and it's gone global.
"It's a bit strange, some of the comments are strange.
"I'm sure Manchester United will deal with it once they've seen the full interview and they'll take the action that they need to.
"It wasn't a criticism, what I said. Age comes to all of us and Cristiano is finding that difficult to accept."
In what can also be deemed as a lack of respect for his former teammate, Ronaldo suggested that Rooney's criticism was born out of jealousy before making reference to his appearance.
“I don’t know why he criticises me so badly... probably because he finished his career and I’m still playing at high level," he said. “I’m not going to say that I’m looking better than him. Which is true."
