A share of the spoils in Stratford

Both sides have endured underwhelming seasons, with West Ham starting the weekend 15th in the table and needing a point to guarantee survival, while Leeds are 18th after a run of seven without a victory.

The Hammers battled to a deserved 1-0 win over Manchester United in their previous home Premier League game, and they also defeated Dutch opponents AZ Alkmaar 2-1 at the London Stadium in the first leg of their Conference League semi-final.

West Ham, despite their woes, have developed a happy knack in the top flight for beating teams below them, defeating Everton, Nottingham Forest and Southampton on their own patch in 2023.

Visitors Leeds have won just twice on the road this season, but this period of the campaign produces odd results, and they actually got the better of the Hammers in Stratford last season.

After the Whites’ improvement at home to Newcastle, new boss Sam Allardyce will feel a third away win in 2022-23 is possible, especially if his Hammers counterpart David Moyes chooses to rotate, as he did in last Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Brentford.

However, that could be a double-edged sword. While his much changed team may lack cohesion, those coming in will have a point to prove as they look to make their case ahead of the Conference League final in Prague against Italian club Fiorentina on June 7.

The Whites and the Hammers played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in early January, and more of the same could be on the agenda.

Regardless of the game’s outcome, it looks likely to be a spectacular match with plenty of goals.

Leeds were far more effective in attack against Newcastle, while West Ham’s players will be looking to prove they deserve a place in the starting side for Prague.

The pair also have a recent history of producing goals, with that reverse match more than four months ago and Leeds’ 3-2 win last season at the London Stadium.

There could be another game with over 3.5 goals, especially if the hosts are disjointed by Moyes’s expected switches. Leeds are sure to create chances in their quest for what could prove a crucial victory, and it may well be a high-scoring affair.

Rodrigo to shine away from midfield battle

A player Leeds could rely on is Rodrigo, who netted in his side’s last away game at Manchester City and was also on target in the reverse fixture.

The Spaniard’s best position is still unclear, but his intelligent movement means he often finds space – something likely to be provided should Moyes mix and match his back line.

It could be the same situation in midfield, with Flynn Downes a contender to start in the Hammers’ engine room.

Most of the 24-year-old’s football this season has come in the Conference League, but in the recent rotation he has increasingly featured domestically. He could come in should either Declan Rice, widely predicted to be on the move at the end of the season, or Tomas Soucek be rested for this last West Ham home game of 2022-23.

A third Premier League yellow card of the season could beckon for Downes, not least because of his duel with Weston McKennie.

The American has received seven cautions since his January loan move to Leeds from Italian outfit Juventus, and it is easy to envisage the pair snapping into each other.

Odds are correct at the time of publication and are subject to change.

While Gianluca Scamacca is the only long-term absentee after no new injuries were picked up at AZ Alkmaar, Moyes is poised to opt for substantial changes in first-XI personnel.

Stuart Dallas, Tyler Adams, Luis Sinisterra and Marc Roca are all unavailable for Allardyce while Liam Cooper is now back in training.
