Where And When To Watch Sony’s PlayStation Showcase, And What To Expect

Since E3 is fully dead, we now have an archipelago of various gaming showcases this summer, some of which are tied to Geoff Keighley’s Summer Games Fest, some of which are doing their own thing.

Today we have Sony’s big showcase, which is essentially their stand-in for an E3-timed show, not that Sony had even been going to E3 lately. It is not a huge 90 minute or two hour show, but instead should be just over an hour, plenty of time for big reveals and showcases all the same. So, here’s what you need to know.

What to Expect: Well, that’s a little more complicated.

The only thing Sony has said explicitly about what’s coming is the following:

“The show will run a bit over an hour, focusing on PS5 and PS VR2 games in development from top studios from around the world. Expect a glimpse at several new creations from PlayStation Studios, as well as spellbinding games from our third-party partners and indie creators.”

Third party partners seems likely to include Square Enix showing off more from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, if not an announcement that Sony is buying Square Enix outright (kidding, maybe). PS VR2 will be featured which makes sense considering Sony has just revealed that despite some skepticism, its actually outselling PS VR1, so they will obviously continue to invest in it.

But those big, big first party games everyone wants to see? It stands to reason that Spider-Man 2 will be shown off with actual gameplay for the first time. I would also expect to see a release date if as claimed, the game will indeed be out for holiday 2023.

It also certainly seems like time to show off something concrete about this Last of Us Factions multiplayer title that Naughty Dog is working on. In fact, it’s probably time Sony starts talking about this alleged list of 12 live service games they have in the works that is going to make up a huge chunk of their investment going forward. Personally, I would love if this was the time that Bungie finally debuted one of their new live IPs they’re working on, which would fit right into those Sony plans, but there have been no teases from them that’s happening. But who knows?
