Why people are posting their Urban Dictionary name meanings on Instagram

Urban Dictionary has been around since the late 1990s, but it is currently seeing a surge in popularity thanks to a new trend.

People have been searching their names on the platform and then sharing the results on Instagram and Twitter.

Why? Because the results are almost always extremely complimentary.

For example, the first entry under “Alex” begins: “The most amazing man you could ever meet. Truly a life-changing human being.”

Here’s what you need to know about the new meme.

People are sharing screenshots of their Urban Dictionary name definition on Instagram, along with a sticker encouraging others to do the same.

Twitter users are also sharing their definitions with the caption: “Show your name in Urban Dictionary, here’s mine”.

However, posts mocking the trend are getting far more traction than people actually participating.

Urban Dictionary definitions can be posted by users. Most definitions for names are from the early 2010s and are largely people writing nice things about partners, friends and family members… and probably sometimes themselves.

The first entry for Steven reads: “A Steven is one of a kind. If you ever go out with a Steven, you will always feel like you rule the world… like a princess. Never will they ever do anything to hurt you. Stevens always have huge muscles, cute belly buttons, and a forehead… that only his girlfriend will admire.”

The entry for Alice reads: “The best girl ever. All the boys want her she is popular, smart, funny and beautiful. She is super hot and will have an extremely successful future.”

You get the idea.

The trend is far from new. In fact, the first Urban Dictionary definition for the word “name”, posted back in 2014, reads: “An area of definitions on Urban Dictionary with absolutely no purpose except to get on people’s nerves by unjustifiably talking about how awesome someone with a certain name is. The existence of names as definitions on this website is nothing but an obnoxious joke.”

How to find yours

Finding your own Urban Dictionary definition is very simple.

All you have to do is go to the website and search your name in the top bar.

There will likely be multiple entries for your name, so you can pick your favourite to share if you wish.

Urban Dictionary is an alternative dictionary that provides definitions for slang terms and phrases.

For example, on the homepage currently is the definition for “OP”, which can either mean “overpowered”, normally in a gaming sense, or “original poster” – used to describe the person who starts a thread on a forum like Reddit.

Most of the site’s definitions are legitimately used colloquial terms, but the name definitions are nothing more than a bit of fun/cringe (delete as appropriate).
