Alistair Darling legacy as former Labour chancellor dies aged 70 | Planet Holyrood

Alistair Darling, the former Labour chancellor who led the No campaign during the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, has died. The veteran politician passed away after a short battle with cancer. A statement issued today on behalf of his family said: “The death of Alistair Darling, a former Chancellor of the Exchequer and long-serving member of the Labour cabinet, was announced in Edinburgh today. “Mr Darling, the much-loved husband of Margaret and beloved father of Calum and Anna, died after a short spell in Western General Hospital under the wonderful care of the cancer team.” Darling, 70, was an ever-present member of the Labour Governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.
