Almost 1,000 killed by Afghanistan earthquake causes Taliban appeal for international help

Early reports said at least 300 people were killed when a tremor of magnitude 6.1 hit the country already suffering from an unfolding humanitarian crisis. Collapsing houses and landslides claimed casualties in the provinces of Paktika and Khost, along the border with Pakistan. "Hundreds of houses have been destroyed and unfortunately 300 civilians have been martyred and more than 500 injured," Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban's supreme leader, said in a statement.
