American XL bully ban: What happens if you own a banned dog breed in the UK - can it be taken away?
The American XL bully dog will be banned by the end of the year following a series of attacks, it has been announced. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak confirmed American bully XL dogs will be banned after the work is done to define the breed. He says they will be banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act by the end of 2023 after there is a clear definition of the breed. Currently, it's illegal to own four breeds of dog in the UK: the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasileiro. In 1991, the UK Government brought in legislation to prohibit certain breeds in response to incidents of attacks of humans. The Dangerous Dog Act 1991 is breed specific, meaning people are not allowed to own or breed the dogs listed - with these breeds originally bred for fighting. If a dog is added to the banned dogs list, it means it is illegal for anyone in the UK to own, breed, or sell them. So, what happens if you own a banned dog breed in the UK and can it be taken away?
