Barbados leaves colonial history behind and becomes a republic
President Sandra Mason was sworn in as the new head of state in the Barbados capital Bridgetown. The celebrations were attended by Prince Charles, who acknowledged the 'appalling atrocity of slavery, which forever stains our history'.
