The Government believes the Protocol - agreed with the European Union during Brexit talks in 2019 - must be rewritten or scrapped because it requires checks on British goods entering the country, but months of negotiations with Brussels have failed to yield a new agreement. Boris Johnson will visit Belfast on Monday to urge an end to the current gridlock gripping Stormont, where DUP politicians who oppose the Protocol have blocked the election of a new Speaker.
