Conservatives lose West Midlands mayoral contest to Labour

Labour has won a surprise victory in the West Midlands mayoral contest as Andy Street became the most prominent casualty of Sir Keir Starmer’s march towards No 10. Street, who was known as the most powerful Tory outside Westminster, was ousted as mayor of the West Midlands as Labour claimed a string of victories across England, putting the party on track to form the next government. The former managing director of John Lewis was defeated by Labour’s Richard Parker by 1,508 votes in a “knife-edge” finish that saw a bundle check and a partial recount. The result was declared shortly before 9pm, with Street polling 224,082 votes to Parker’s 225,590.
