Earthquake kills at least 1,000 in Afghanistan as rescuers race against time
AT least 1,000 people have died after a powerful earthquake struck Afghanistan. Authorities say more than 1,500 people have also been injured in remote parts of the south of the country as the huge tremors from the 6.1 magnitude quake crushed people in their homes. The quake - Afghanistan's deadliest in two decades - struck about 44km from the city of Khost, near the Pakistani border, at a depth of 51km early on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said.
