European Council President grants Ukraine EU candidate status in 'historic moment'

The 27 heads of state and government gave their approval to Ukraine being considered for EU membership in what was described a a historic show of support for Kyiv. President of the European Council Charles Michel hailed the move as a "historic moment" and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, said it was "a sign of hope in troubled times."
