Facebook making online hate worse, claims whistleblower

Former Facebook data scientist turned whistleblower Frances Haugen said Facebook is "making hate worse" as she gave evidence to a Parliamentary committee scrutinising online safety legislation Monday. The committee is proposing big fines or other significant penalties for companies that do not limit and get rid of harmful online material. "Part of why I came forward is that I am extremely, extremely worried about the condition of our societies," Haugen said. She said that Facebook didn't intent to "prioritise polarising, divisive content. It just happened to be a side effect of choices they did make."
