First nationalist leader appointed in Northern Ireland

Michelle O’Neill, the Sinn Fein vice president, has made history as the first nationalist elected to the position of first minister of Northern Ireland. Members of the legislative assembly (MLAs) gathered at Stormont on Saturday for a sitting where ministers were appointed to a power-sharing executive, bringing an end to a two-year impasse. She described the return of the executive as a day that “opens the door to the future — a shared future” and told MLAs: “I am honoured to stand here as first minister.
