Two Israeli hostages have been rescued during a raid by special forces in Rafah in southern Gaza, the Israeli military has said. Louis Har, 70, and Simon Marman, 60, were captured from Kibbutz Nir Yizhak by Hamas when they attacked Israel on October 7th. Palestinian officials say at least seven people were killed during the raid on a residential building. Both hostages are reportedly in “good medical condition”, recovering at Sheba Hospital in central Israel. Louis Har’s son-in-law told reporters what happened when the family were reunited in the early hours of the morning. “He even did not forget, today by chance, it's my birthday, so the first thing he told me was - Hey, Idan, you have a birthday today, I did not forget. He remembered. His daughter, Rinat, had a birthday last week on February 5th, he immediately hugged her, and told her Mammal tov.” While the operation was a success for the IDF, around 100 hostages taken by Hamas are thought to still be alive… … while the remains of 30 more killed during the intense fighting are yet to be recovered. Israeli forces hope to find them as their ground forces close in on the city of Rafah in southern Gaza. But there are already fears for the million or so displaced Palestinians taking shelter in the city, with no safe zones to flee to.
