"Israel aims to destroy Hamas" as negotiators head to Egypt
Israel said on Tuesday (May 7) its objective remains to destroy the Islamist Palestinian group Hamas, as its negotiators were set to leave for ceasefire talks in the Egyptian capital Cairo. International organizations were "encouraged" to evacuate Rafah before Israel began its operation in the eastern part of the city, said Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer.
