Israeli tanks take control of Rafah crossing

Israel’s military has taken control of the Rafah crossing, along the Egyptian border, from the Gazan side, sending troops on the ground in what it described as a “precise counterterrorism operation” on a specific area. A military spokesperson said the crossing in eastern Rafah was being used “for terrorist purposes”. On Monday, Israel warned over 100,000 Palestinians to evacuate the area and move to Al-Masawi, a place they say is a designated safe zone. In a briefing early Tuesday morning, an Israeli military official said troops had killed some 20 militants in the operation in Rafah so far, and located three tunnel shafts that were in use. The official said the operation is not over, but could not give a timeline.
