Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping meet at start of virtual summit to cool tensions

US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping stressed their responsibility to the rest of the world to avoid conflict as the heads of the two top global economies opened their closely watched talks on Monday. "It seems to me our responsibility as leaders of China and the United States is to ensure that our competition between our countries does not veer into conflict, whether intended or unintended," Mr Biden said. "Just simple, straightforward competition." Calling Mr Biden an "old friend," Mr Xi said the two sides must increase communication and cooperation to solve the many challenges they face.
